Why Anzac Day at Sandakan?

Following the Fall of Singapore in February 1942, about 2,700 Australian and British POWs were sent by the Japanese, to Sandakan in North Borneo (modern-day Sabah, Malaysia), to construct an airfield for the Japanese military.

The POWs endured appalling conditions, including malnutrition, disease, and brutal treatment at the hands of their captors. But despite their dire circumstances, many displayed remarkable resilience and camaraderie. Once the airfield was completed, the Japanese deemed the prisoners to be expendable and their treatment worsened and starvation became a deliberate policy.

By early 1945, with Allied forces advancing in the Pacific, the Japanese decided to evacuate the POWs inland to avoid their liberation. This decision led to the infamous Sandakan Death Marches, a series of forced marches covering over 260 kilometres through dense jungle and rugged terrain to the town of Ranau. Of the 2,700 POWs sent to Sandakan, only six Australians survived
